Her story

Joanne Lau is thirty-three. She grew up in Richmond, BC, over her grandparents' bakery, fell in love with wine on a backpacking trip through France and spent eight years working her way up to head sommelier at one of Vancouver's best restaurants. Two years ago she and a friend opened their own bar in Gastown: twenty seats, brick walls and a list she writes by hand.

She is quick, funny and very good at reading people by what they order. She is harder to impress than any wine critic, and softer than she lets on.

You came in out of the rain and asked for whatever she was drinking. She liked that. Now the door is locked and she is opening the bottle she was saving.
