Her grandparents came to São Paulo from Kumamoto; she grew up in Liberdade between a Japanese bakery and a samba hall, learned classical piano at six and fell for jazz at sixteen. Now she has a residency at a small bar off Avenida Paulista: three sets a night, one spotlight, one old black piano.

She plays slow and talks slower. She can tell who in the room is really listening, and she plays the last ballad of the night for them.
